In an effort to make Jazz Info more available to everyone, I used to
spend lots of time as an editor at DMOZ.org for The Jazz Catagory, and other catagories.
Now I'm content to manage my own links , some are posted now, and the rest will be posted shortly. Come back and check them out, and then add yours if it's missing. That way you can help others along the way
also. Thanks!!

Hi,
I just joined the list and was wondering if there's anyone out there who
knows of a jazz violin instructor in the Denver area. I've always wanted to
play violin and I love jazz. I've been listening to KUVO and they play a
lot of jazz violin pieces which have inspired me. I also wondered if anyone
could suggest where I could get sheet music written for jazz violin.
Thanks for your help.

Hi
I have just joined the list and thought I would introduce myself.
I live in Cardiff, Wales, UK. I have been interested in Jazz since being
introduced to it via records of the Hot Club of France in the mid 1950s by
my then music teacher in school.
I like all kinds of jazz from early Ellington to Harry Conick jnr. Main
interests are in anything that swings.
I have a good collection of jazz on CD, tape, LP and a few treasured 1940s
78s.

I just spent Saturday watching the entire Ken Burns documentary on Jazz. I
also had my Oxford Companion to Jazz by Bill Kirchner
and my John Mehegan Series on Piano Improvisation. It was great to hear
Louis Armstrong's West End Blues and be able to follow along with the
transcriptions.
I haven't seen anything about Django. Maybe I missed it when I went to the
bathroom. I will have to discard it in its entirety if Django's
contribution is even slighty understated.
Anyone ever read a straightforward analysis of Coltrane's Giant Steps
enough to tell me how to solo over the changes? I can play the melody with
my right hand and the changes with my left, however, the atonality throws
me for a loop when I try to riff. I keep trying to think in a short tonal
sense but I know that there is a structure that is underlying that is so
much more than flights of diatonism.

Who coined the phrase "Smooth jazz"? As if actual jazz lacks refinement!
"Smooth jazz" is just light jazz fusion/new world music. Is it possible
that there actually exist people who embrace both smooth jazz and actual
jazz as being similar?
